One of the most enjoyable ways of socialising and making new friends is to join a group or club.

If you live in a city or large town you will probably have plenty of choice; in rural areas, there are likely to be fewer options so you might need to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.

Some clubs cater for everyone, while others are geared towards particular interests, e.g. writing and walking groups. There are also groups whose members have their age, disability or long-term condition in common.

Support groups

Lunch clubs are a great way to meet people who live near you and most meet at least once a week.

Many national charities arrange social activities where individuals and their families can get together, e.g. Parkinson’s UK has support groups across Wales.

If you are looking after someone, you might consider going along to a carers’ group or café.

The British Legion has clubs across Wales and there is no requirement for members to be serving or former Forces personnel.

Hobbies and activities

If you are interested in getting more active, it might be worth considering clubs linked to indoor or outdoor activities, e.g. a bowling or tennis club.

If arts and culture are more your thing, you might consider joining a drama group or writing group (ask at your local library).

If you enjoy crafts like painting, needlework or wood-turning, why not find out if there is a group that meets near you? Your local adult education or community centre should be able to tell you.

The University of the Third Age has nearly 60 groups across Wales offering lots of social, leisure and learning opportunities for retirees or those who no longer work full-time. Activities vary between groups but range from arts appreciation, languages, gardening, walking, photography, creative writing, patchwork and quilting, music and computing.

If you have time on your hands, you might consider volunteering? There are many charities and organisations who would welcome you with open arms.

Rotary International, the Round Table, Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and the Women's Institute are always looking for new members to support their community activities.
