Occasionally, the local council might want to combine your carer’s needs assessment with an assessment of the support needs of the person you are looking after.
While this might be sensible in some circumstances, neither of you has to agree to it.
If you are looking after an adult, either of you can insist on having your own needs assessment done separately and privately.
Carers of disabled children
If you are looking after a disabled child, the council can override your wishes for a separate assessment, but only if it believes that a combined assessment would be in the best interests of the child (even if you are a young carer).
