Never underestimate the danger of gas. Gas safety risks include gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gas appliances that are fitted, repaired or maintained by illegal or unqualified people can be lethal.

Gas Safe has useful advice on its website, including information for older and vulnerable groups, e.g. blind people. There are true stories about what can go wrong, sometimes with tragic results.

Gas safety checks

If you rent your property, your landlord is required to carry out an annual gas safety check on every gas appliance and flue by law. You should receive a record of the gas safety certificate within 28 days of the inspection.

If you own your property, you may qualify for a free gas safety check if you are an older person, disabled, have a chronic health problem or under 18 and receive a means-tested benefit. Contact your gas provider for more information.

Gas Safe Register

The Gas Safe Register is an official list of gas engineers who are registered to work safely and legally with gas (it replaces CORGI registration). Use the register to find a qualified gas engineer in your area or to check if someone is gas registered. Call: 0800 408 5500.

All registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card showing the type of work they are qualified to do. Each ID card has a unique number on it, which you can check online.
